Itron to Unveil New Modular Metering and Communication Platform at Metering Europe
Itron's innovative, modular, interoperable and secure platform will help utilities invest with confidence in the smart grid
ISSY-LES-MOULINEAUX, France—September 30, 2011—Itron, Inc. (NASDAQ: ITRI) announced today the launch of its new generation metering and communication platform. Designed to anticipate technical evolution and to protect investments, Itron's metering and communication platform enables utilities to address future market requirements by offering an interoperable, modular and secure foundation for future smart grid applications.
Based on open standards, this new platform reflects Itron's commitment to interoperability. It has been designed to seamlessly integrate with several international communication standards, ensuring true communication technology interoperability and increased options for utilities.
Furthermore, Itron's new metering and communication platform is built upon a modular architecture, accommodating two external, field swappable modules affording various communication technologies (PLC, GPRS, UMTS/3G, Ethernet, Mesh RF, Zigbee, MBus wireless, and so on). This translates into easy adaptability of communications to both the local area network (LAN) and the home area network (HAN), as requirements and technologies evolve.
Another key capability of Itron's new generation metering and communication platform lies in the remote upgradeability of applications and protocols, making the platform easily extensible and future-proof. This provides utilities with greater flexibility to face fast-evolving regulatory requirements.
Also fundamental to the new Itron metering and communication platform is that security is included by-design. A variety of potential threats were taken in to account during the development of the platform.
